HVAA Cares

HVAA’s Next Play program was built to demonstrate to our athletes that our coaches and leadership are committed to supporting them through recovery as they work toward their next play following an HVAA soccer-related injury. Next Play is HVAA’s recovery support player initiative designed to help injured athletes stay connected, stay positive, and stay focused. Whether they’re on the sidelines temporarily or navigating a longer road to recovery, HVAA’s Next Play program will serve as a constant reminder for our athletes that their journey is not over; it is simply entering a new phase where they will come back stronger. HVAA’s Next Play program keeps our players in the game, even when they are not on the field, helping them heal with purpose, regain strength, and return tougher than ever.

How Parents Can Support Their Child & Get Ready for The Next Play

At HVAA, we know injuries are an unfortunate part of the game. While we can’t always prevent them, we can help guide players toward a complete, safe recovery. For many young athletes, soccer feels like their whole world. When an injury sidelines them, it can feel like their identity is shaken. That’s why it’s so essential for them to lean on other outlets, such as school, hobbies, and friendships, while they heal. If the injury requires physical therapy, whether done in a clinic or through at-home exercises, make sure your child follows the program recommended by their doctor. Physical therapy plays a huge role in recovery when needed. The key is for your child to follow at a pace that feels right for them.

What is the most important thing you can do for your child? Show patience. Healing takes time. Encourage your child to move forward step by step, without fear of being rushed back onto the field. Supporting their desire to return is powerful, but pushing too hard, too soon, can cause setbacks and, in the worst cases, make them want to give up the game altogether. Our message to all our HVAA families is this: "Your child’s journey is bigger than one season. Together we can keep them safe, confident, and ready for their Next Play."

How Players Can Stay Involved With their HVAA Team While Injured

Even if you are sidelined due to an injury, you can still grow, contribute, and feel part of your HVAA team. Here are some ways that you can still grow your game:

1. Attend Practices & Games (If and when cleared to attend)

  • Sit on the bench or stand with coaches
  • Track stats for your team.
  • Listen to the coach's tactics and feedback during training and matches.
  • Be a motivator! Your energy matters even when you’re not on the field.

2. Take on a Support Role & Assist the Coaching Staff (If physically able)

  • Help set up & clean up cones, balls, and other equipment
  • Keep track of time during a game or scrimmage.

3. Grow Your Soccer IQ

  • Ask your coach to explain certain decisions or patterns of play.
  • Learn to "Read the game" as if you were on the field. Notice how many runs off the ball, pressing triggers, defensive shape, etc.
  • Watch games and focus on one position or tactic at a time.  (If physically able)
  • Play EA Sports Soccer Video Games and compete virtually with teammates.  (If physically able)

4. Build Mental Toughness

  • Maintain a positive attitude during your recovery.
  • Remember that setbacks are temporary and can be used as fuel for growth.
