The Huntingdon Valley Chess Society Juniors is considered by some high ranking members of the USCF to be one of the, if not the, longest, continuously operated, community based, chess club for juniors, affiliated with the USCF, in the United States.
The HVCSJ was founded in 1978. Its meetings back then were held in the old Huntingdon Valley Library. Today the HVCSJ is holding its meetings above the new Huntingdon Valley Library, in the Community Room. The HVCSJ held meetings on a regular basis throughout this entire 30-year period.
During a large part of this time period, the HVCSJ was known throughout the Delaware Valley for running huge, extremely popular, USCF rated tournaments in Montgomery County on a yearly basis.
On May 24, 2002, the Huntingdon Valley Activities Association began to financially sponsor and provide general support for the HVCSJ This was a watershed moment for the HVCSJ because it made the club known to a wider audience of potential chess players, and through the financial support of the HVAA, it enabled the club to become much more involved in local, state, and national tournaments than the club ever had been before. Since becoming involved with the HVAA, the HVCSJ has won numerous individual, school team, and club trophies at the local, state, and national level. The HVCSJ is now one of the most recognized chess club for juniors in the state of Pennsylvania.
